“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”
There are certain events in life that bring tremendous heartache. Some events are so emotionally taxing that hope seems to be lost. Where do we turn while in the storms of life? I want to be careful here, but let me remind those who are currently experiencing tremendous heart ache due to loss that God will not wait for you to turn to Him for comfort. No, God as a good Father comes to us and embraces us. In that is the invitation for His children to turn and embrace Him!
The Lord is near those who have a broken heart. That is God knows and is near you right now as you are enduring heartache. He is your comfort and He can shoulder the burden you have. God in Christ has experienced all the emotions of personal loss. It does not matter your experience. Jesus was rejected, despised, and abused by those whom He loves. Yes, God even knows the pains from losing a loved one in death. For Christ endured death, death on a cross for those whom He loved. Yes, Jesus died for those who rejected Him, despised Him, and abused Him. If your heart pains come from being mistreated by those you love or from the loss of a loved one to death, Jesus understands. For all these emotions are found in the cross that Christ took for you. God knows the burden of a broken heart! Therefore God can relate to us during our deepest pains and in our darkest hour.
The Lord saves those with a contrite spirit. God is not a God of knowledge alone but a God who acts. The omniscience of God drives the omnipotence of God for His people. God brings about salvation to the emotionally broken. As a saved child of God, the Christian can have confidence knowing that God has not only saved their soul but will save them through the most troubling of times. When you have not the strength to endure anymore, God is there to bring you along. God is there to carry you down the path of restoration.
Psalm 34 gives us three practical applications to help us through our deepest hurts.
Psalm 34:1 “ I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
David reminds us that the Lord is to be praised in every situation. Even when it hurts, God is to be praised. There is something about singing praise to God during our hurts that bring about incremental healing. God works through our pains as we praise Him. So praise Him!
Psalm 34:4 “ I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.”
When we are in a dark place of hurt and heartache our instructions are that we cry out to God for help. Seeking God as our refuge and safety during troubling times is the prescription for the Christian. We can cry out to God and be confident that God hears our cry. No matter the depth of our hurt, God hears our cry. He is a God that hears the cry of His children and delivers them from trouble. So cry out to Him!
Psalm 34:8 “ Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man that trust in Him!”
God is to be trusted! Take a sensory test of God. Praise Him, Cry out to Him, and Trust Him. God is good and over time as you trust in Him you can be assured that He will make whole again your heart that has been broken into a thousand pieces. So trust in Him!
